This is an announcement for this season's 2011/12 - "Level 1 Avalanche, for Rescue Personnel" class.

This opportunity is open to all ski patrollers and SAR personnel. The Level 1 Avalanche for Rescue Personnel course is intended to prepare attendees to participate with search and rescue operations in avalanche prone terrain and conditions.

Classroom; January 10th, 12th, and 17th, 2012
Time: 6-10 PM
Place: Bellevue (TBD)

Field Session A: January 21-22nd, 2012, 8 AM - 6 PM
Field Session B: January 28-29nd, 2012, 8 AM - 6 PM
Place: Snoqualmie Pass (TBD)

This class is restricted to 32 participants. Each field session is restricted to 16 participants. Each participant will be assigned to either field session A or B upon registration. Please do not ask for a given preference unless you really cannot make one (for example: if you're getting married on one of the weekends).

Cost: $40 - Includes mailings, refreshments, a copy of the textbooks, and any remainder donated to NWAC. Textbooks include:

- Snow Sense
- NSP Avalanche Rescue Fundamentals
- NSP Avalanche Rescue Quick Guide
- NSP Backcountry Avalanche Safety: A Level 1 Summary

Books will be mailed to all participants. If you already have a copy of the exact edition of any textbook, bring both to the first class and we can reimburse you the face value of that book, if still in "new" condition. Our intent is that every participant end up with at least one copy of each textbook in their household, for future reference.

Registration is open from now until December 23rd, 2011. Registrations received after December 23rd, will be rejected. Textbooks, pre-course work, and classroom information, will be mailed the start of the following week. This class typically fills up fast, so please register as early as possible.

Level I Avalanche for Rescue Personnel (course # 22657)

Instructor of Record: Neil Geisler, Alpental Volunteer Ski Patrol (AVSP)

WHEN and WHERE:
Classroom dates: Jan. 31st, Feb. 2nd, and Feb. 7th, 2012
Time and location: 6-10 p.m. in Seattle (location TBA, but likely at Cascade Designs in SODO)
Field: @ Alpental, Feb. 10th and 11th

Classroom sessions will be held in conjunction with NSP Level I Avalanche for Rescue Personnel Course #22565 (Instructor of Record: Dick Willy of Cascade Backcountry Patrol (CBSP). These courses will have separate field dates (field dates for CBSP are TBD)

FEES: $50 -- includes necessary books (discounts may be given if you already have one or more of the books)

DEADLINE TO ENROLL: Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012.

Preference for enrollment given in this order:

  • · Alpental and CBSP patrollers and candidates
  • · Other Snoqualmie patrollers
  • · SAR members
  • · Friends/family of any of the above
  • This course is particularly for those able to travel on skis/snowboards for field sessions in the Alpental backcountry (i.e. not restricted to snowshoes). For snowshoers, there may be an option to participate in the field sessions with CBSP on a space-available basis. Please inquire.
    Non-patrollers/SAR members will be permitted as space is available at a fee of $80. (Total max enrollment: 20).

    EQUIPMENT: In addition to ski/board equipment, enrollees are expected to have an avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel. If you do not have these items already, a few sets may be available for loan during field sessions (please inquire with instructor), however it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you look into purchasing these items, and all are available at great pro-deal prices through NSP/AVSP/etc.

    At a minimum, all AVSP patrollers are expected to complete an Avalanche Fundamentals course with their first few years of patrolling.
