The Hyak Ski Patrol is a group of dedicated volunteers, brought together by our love of the outdoors, and the desire to help other people. If on the way, we have some fun, so much the better. Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, Mechanics, Fire Fighters, Contractors, Students, Nurses, Computer programmers, Salesmen, Homemakers and Retired Professionals. Members of the Hyak Ski Patrol are diverse and have been specifically trained for the demanding task of rescuing and caring for injured or ill patients in the outdoors, alpine and winter environments.
Many times ones joining the ski patrol is motivated through a desire to “give back to the community”. It soon becomes so much more. Friendships established through ski patrol last a lifetime and through generations. On the Hyak Ski Patrol, we have many patrollers that are second and even third generation patrollers. Members of the Hyak Ski Patrol still have the sense of small town. That’s what skiing used to be all about, that’s the heritage we still live.
As a volunteer organization, we do not charge for our services. However, there are considerable expenses in running an organization such as ours. We are in need of anatomical training models as well as charts and other learning aids to facilitate our Outdoor Emergency Care course. We are in constant communication with all patrollers using business-band radios, which need to be kept in top running condition, at considerable expense. Additionally, these radios are slated for obsolescence as communications move to the digital realm.
